Devolution in Hertfordshire

10 Jan 25

The government recently announced it looks to reduce the number of councils in England and that Hertfordshire is one of its priorities.

The County Council has since announced that any devolution changes (a potential merger of Herts borough councils with Herts County council to create 1-3 larger councils for Herts) will not be immediate.

All 10 borough Councils in Herts, including Welwyn Hatfield, announced a statement to show they are not in favour of this approach.

An early worry for Together is how effectively any merged planning function would protect and preserve WGC’s unique heritage and Garden City status, whilst allowing for appropriate growth. So let’s work together to ensure local resident’s views are taken into account in this consultation process. We will keep you updated as we learn more.
